Vietnam Tours - International tourists have been flocking to Hoi An for many years, treading a well-worn path. However, Huynh Phuoc Le chanced across a new breed of tourists, keen to get down and dirty’ with the hard-working local farmers.
Every years, thousand of foreign tourists come to Hoi An asking to farm with the local farm-ers. Recently, a group of fourteen Australian tourists came and raked the fields of Cam Ha. The one who did the most raking, surprisingly, was a lady in a flowery skirt, Ms. Kirstine Fyhring. This is an image we have perhaps never seen in Vietnam before.
On their way to the Tra Que vegetable village in Cam Ha, they saw in the field a farmer standing behind a buffalo, ‘surfing’ over the mud. It looks so cute, peaceful and interesting, why don’t we try that out to see how it feel, Kirstine explained. The whole group took off their socks and shoes, rolled up their trousers and waded through a very muddy canal and then thrust their strangely white legs into the muddy field and moved toward the buffalo. The mud was so deep that many almost fell over. Tran Khoa, the tour group leader, made a sign for them to help keep their balance by spreading his hand wide. Kirstine and the women in the group followed suit, moving as if a strangely choreographed ballet troupe gliding through the field. The gentle-looking buffalo stood still, wating for each one of the tourist to step onto the wooden rake. They had to bend their back or else thay would fall rake, which would likely cut their legs. I’m a little scared, but we will get used to it after a while. It’s all right! One tourist observed. Kirstine had raked five fur-rows, the beads of sweat pouring down over her tore-head, but she refused to give her place to the others. I look back and see the fine furrows I have just raked, I figure in the future the grains of rice would be mixed with my sweat, I feel so excited! Kirstine exclaimed.
Hoi An’s Tra Que vegetable village looks like a green oasis. With vegetation, flowers of different colours, and strong fragrances coming from a wide vari-ety of vegetables, this is one of the race places where farmers don’t use any kind of chemicals. The group of Australian tourisr comment-ed on the fragrance from the vegetables, even when they had moved away from the area itself. The young women sat down close to the bed of vegetables, with their noses pressed up against each petal, each bud.
Another area, called Cam Chau, is where many craftsmen enjoy growing ornamental trees. Several houses with large gardens grows these beautifully trimmed trees. Cam Chau is famous for areca trees, people grow them everywhere, and the immeasurably high trees create a tranquil and seductive spot. The tourist coming here composed poems praising the beauty of Hoi An’s countryside while they participated in the ‘training’ and nurturing the areca trees.
But Cam Thanh would be the place they would remember the most. The tourists coming hre experienced the plight of Hoi An’s fishermen. The tourists completed with one another, throwing and lifting up the fishing nets, then bursting into laughter on the riverside each time somebody caught a fish. Over here the tourists would have a change to get lost in the 35 square mile jungle of coconut-trees where they would be started again and again by all kinds of birds, storks, herons, teals, wild ducks , etcs. Which is turn would themselves flee every time they felt threatened by the appearance of a human being. Then the tourists participated in cutting down the coconut palm leaves and helping the locals to ‘thatch’ their roofs. Or they rolled up their trousers and waded into the mud to soak the bamboo ( a traditional way local people protect the bamboo from being eaten by termites).
This group of tourist were vey happy having been able to try different jobs, experience plights of fellow humans in foreign country, admire several landscapes, and breath the fresh air in an unpolluted countryside. They felt excited eating the fresh vegetables that they themselves had picked right from the garden, and the fish, shrimps and crabs that they had caught directly from the rivers in and around Hoi An using fishing nets borrowed from the local fisherman. |

Many families all around the world are closely bonded that they always find time to see each other, talk, eat and make up to the lost moments they were not together. Not only do they keep the closeness during holidays or school/work breaks, but every free opportunity they see possible. Every family has traditions that serve as bonding time which depends on the availability and budget of the whole family. And most of the times, more families who can afford to spend some extra are taking family vacations.
So what do vacations bring to the family anyway? Usually, these are times where every member especially parents takes these as a chance to unwind and relieve stress from work. Also, these keep the family ties solid since the family has moments to talk and know about how everyone else is doing. These could be a good way to visit new places while sharing happy memories together. And of course, vacations make each member grow individually as happy, mature and loved person without growing emotionally apart. |
